PortØ is a critical, speculative and futures design research team.

Port 0 is the critical and futures design research team of Escola Massana. We analyse current social and technological entanglements -in the ecological, political and subjective arenas-, to excite them through design fiction and speculative methods. By doing so we create stories, objects and interactive systems that help us inhabit different futures and scan their dangers and emancipatory potentialities. We specially take advantage of the narrative power of unbuilt production, drawings of non existing systems and crossed transdisciplinary dialogs.
Our team is composed of students, teachers and external collaborators. We work mainly through practice-based collaborative futuring, merging (more than) Human Centered Design, Interaction Design, Science and Technology Studies, Media Studies and Product and Graphic Design.

Port 0 is a material entry point of a network server, one of the many necessary Internet infrastructures. It has been designed not to create direct connections but to redistribute them towards other informational paths. Its purpose is not to be used -it’s nature is to remain empty-, and nevertheless, this emptiness is what makes it special. Is a blind spot where network attacks haunt information about the behaviour and vulnerabilities of the system.

Design is a practice that produces relationships. Some are explicit, others are not. It orders priorities, materials and affects: allows and discriminates forms of use, chains of production and distribution, and ways of knowing, narrating and living in our world.
Network infrastructures articulate what information can or cannot be accessed, in the same way as highways create spaces for stop and refill, when the rest of the road imposes a constant flow. Network infrastructures create the conditions for connectivity but also for data vulnerability, as well as highways imply pollution and accidents. Network infrastructures project to a technological future, highways remind us of a mechanical past to be overcomed.
Design reproduces some pasts, creates a limited range of presents and produces futures where some possibilities and power alignements are more feasible than others. It makes objects and services, but also frames of understanding and imagining.
